The February 1981 edition of the UK magazine "Practical Photography"
reviewed 6 Olympus Zuiko lenses, including the 50mm f1.8 and the 50mm f2
macro. At that time, Practical Photography did MTF tests of lenses. Here
is an extract of what they had to say about the 50mm f2 macro:
"At f2 and f2.8 , both edge and central definition kicks off at respectable
levels, but further stopping down is like lighting the blue touch paper.
Not only does centre frame boast superb contrast from this point, but edge
performance is pretty elevated too -- both figures comfortably exceed the
70% mark at all subsequent apertures."
And in the conclusion to the reviews they said:
"The star performers in this group, however, share a focal length of 50mm.
The f1.8 enjoys some really biting sharpness across the entire frame. The
f2 macro, although larger, also features excellent centre and edge
definition."
The MTF results were shown as bar charts. I have read off the figures as
best I can, and show them below (edge values in parenthesis):
f2 macro: f2=50(48); f2.8=58(55); f4=75(70); f5.6=81(78);
f8=82(75); f11=78(72); f16=72(71)
f1.8 std: f1.8=54(46); f2.8=57(52); f4=82(69); f5.6=85(75);
f8=84(77); f11=72(71); f16=51(52)
