For anyone in the Los Angeles area until June 23, the Getty museum
has a wonderful exhibit of photographs by various photographers
called "Railroad Vision". Most of these are from the era before the
fascination began with the locomotive as a symbol of power. There
are some construction photos, but mostly show the railroad in its
environment. Some are quite beautiful. Even as an environmentalist
concerned about modern air quality I was surprised at the the number
of representations with hazy skies well over a century ago.
A special treat is a large print by O. Winston Link of his incredible
moving locomotive shot across the automobiles at drive-in movie
theater with an airplane on the screen.
