Foam over the prism is definitely a no-no -- as the foam dissolves, it also
dissolves the paint and mirror-coating on the prism. It should be removed
from every camera as soon as it's discovered. The only "+" is that it helps
keep debris from dropping between the prism and eyepiece. On later models,
Olympus included a "shroud" as part of the plastic mask that went between the
prism and it's retaining spring.
