I think it's a sign that the lens was actually used by its former owner, and 
not left in the case or on a shelf, since use of the lens allows air (and 
dust, no helping that)  to enter the lens. Look at it this way- if the lens 
actually was used, it must have been liked by its owner, and hence, probably 
gives good results!
