Some fine printers, notably the late Fred Picker of Zone VI Studios,
recommended using the next longer focal length enlarging lens (compared to
normal), which for 35 mm would be a 75. The reason was supposedly better
quality. Of, course Fred used a Beseler 45 even for 35 mm printing, so he
didn't run into the height/size limitation that you did. Probably more
important is that you check alignment of the len board, baseboard, and
negative carrier - be sure all are parallel.
By the way, even an ancient Beseler 23 is a fine instrument, and you can
stll get parts.

I picked up some ancient but seemingly quite useable darkroom
equipment - a Beseler 23 (?) enlarger with two Schneider lenses.
In the process of printing some of my latest and greatest (?) OM
creations I am now wondering.... I have the two lenses - a 50mm and a
75mm, and i print 35mm and 120. Which lens should i be using for
which format? For 35mm, with the 75 the enlarger is almost as high as
it will go to get a 8x10 print. it's a little unwieldy, but i thought
i remember a friend advising me to use the 75 most of the time.
