In common with other precision made items, within industry and individual
manufacturers' tolerances and quality controls - the "on paper" specs can
vary quite alot. In the case of optical items this is very much so -
although the higher up the price range you go - the less variance is
expected and visa versa. But both at the top, bottom, and everywhere in
between, these variances can be to the extent that "testing" just one, or
even a couple, may not be enough of a sample for a genuine reflection of the
average product item.
And a good example of this is when buying binoculars - always a good idea to
try several of the same item and compare side by side, as you might find one
visibly better than the others. Again, while this is more likely in the
lower price ranges, it is not exclusively so at all. The 50mm f/1.8 Zuiko in
the test may have simply been a mediocre individual unit. I always take
"paper numbers" as "for what it's worth"; a useful guide - but not the law
by any means.

Lee

By now it's obvious that I spent another session reading Gary's lens testing
results. How come everyone praises the 50 / f1.8 of the "Made in Japan" MC
variant? His results don't match the praise heaped upon it.
I'm not doubting his tests but wow, is picture taking THAT much different
from resolution testing?
Scratching my head yet again,
