[OM] Strange diopter effect

I went out today to take pictures of the local frog pond (most of the fun
is over, alas) with the big tamron 80-200 and discovered that I've had my 4T
screwed up all these months and not known it.

The tamron has alway be a pain to focus, and today's brown-on-tan subject
matter only made things worse. But I particularly noticed that when the
image was sharpest in the matte part of the viewfinder, the top of the split-screen focusing section was crystal-clear and the bottom part was
generally so blurry that I couldn't tell what lines were supposed to match
up with anything. This isn't the case with any of my other lenses, so I
sort of thought it was the tamron being finicky (80-200/2.8 is not your
typical optical path)

Instead, it's the fault of where I set the diopter adjustment to give my
aging eyes the best view of the exposure meter.By turning the knob back a
ways, I was able to bring the top and bottom of the split-screen into sharp
focus at the same time. Of course that position made the matte part of the
screen a little unsharp even when the spitscreen indicated good focus, so I
settled on a compromise position about 1:30... My head is still spinning with
trying to visualize the ray paths that could make this kind of thing happen.

Anyone else experience something like this?
