This is a perfect use for a small rangefinder i.e. 35-RC, XA, or Canonet...
Working examples sometimes need the foam replaced, but that is not too hard
to figure out, and you can find them for $25-$50 or so. I think these are
better than newer auto point-and-shoots because of the faster lens and some
manual options for use in poor light (like 'tornado weather').
Wish you'd gotten some pics, I saw a funnel cloud once about a mile off,
before heading into the basement, and it was quite awe-inspiring.
