OK, out comes the soapbox!
I HATE digests. I'd rather see the individual subject threads and read or
participate in those that look interesting. Otherwise I have to wade
through the digests, reading a thread that may span more than one digest,
which is quite a pain-in-the-a**.
This way I can scan the subjects, and on weeks when I have little time, only
read the 5-100f the threads that I like. The delete key gets a lot of use
in bulk.
Also, when you reply to a message in a digest, you have to manually cut out
the text that helps keep the message in context, you have to manually enter
the subject so that the thread reads right, and you have to manually cut out
the cc: for the message author.
Again, I don't like them. At least for me.
OT messages are a fact of life for active mailing lists. All you can do is
minimize them. Please don't try to stop them. Sometimes a little OT is
nice, just so long as it doesn't get out of hand.
This topic comes up about 2-3 times per year, and always results in a few
long-time people abandoning the list. Perhaps that's a good thing for some
to abstain from the list for a while. I know I've run at times when the BS
gets too much. And when I return, everything is OK.

Subject: [OM] A suggestion for the list - was: Shiloh Reenactment Photos

A former list member who has removed himself from the OM Exchange
because he is no longer a part of the list, has made a very wise
suggestion. He proposes that if everyone received the daily digests
instead of the active e-mails, it might cut down on the amount of OT
traffic here.
There has been an increasing amount of OT BS here, and it is unfortunate
that we are driving away some of the better contributors...
