If you can find it (it may be out of print) read "Entering Space" by a guy
named Robert Zubrin. Real interesting take on how to get more space flight
without huge "government program" costs.
Interesting note: His contention is that the retreat from manned space
flight after the Apollo program was deliberate--and not due to costs, as
often claimed, but simply as a cynical means of shifting "national policy"
by the Nixon administration to one more to their liking.
