Kierstin, answers to your questions (in reverse order):
1. Correct. If you remove a lens from the camera and store it, BOTH lens
surfaces (front and rear) should have caps over them.
The *rear* cap is *most* important!
A lens can tolerate a small (single) scratch or tiny chip on the front
element, especially near the edge, with little image degradation. Biggest
risk is flare from the scratch or chip if pointed at a very bright light
source. Near the center of the lens element is more of a
problem. However, damage to a lens rear element is much more serious and
affects the images much, much more. Among the Very Bad things for either
end are scrapes and abrasions and this is one of the biggest risks when
storing a lens in a camera bag without caps on it.
2. Almost any camera store should be able to provide you with an
inexpensive slip-on or snap-in camera lens front cover. If your lens is a
Zuiko 50mm/1.8, any generic 49mm lens cover should work. They're less
than $10.00 Canadian, or probably less than 4 pounds UK.
Many larger stores will also have "generic" brand rear lens caps also and
amazingly I still find generic rear caps for OM's along with a host of
other older manual focus camera systems!
