An inexpensive combination that works well for blurring out the background
is the 50mm f-1.8 or f-1.4 with a 2x extender and shot wide open or close to
it. This works great for flowers. /jim

Unfortunately, for artistic
interpretation, the 50mm focal length isn't that good of a
choice. The backgrounds don't blur out like they do with a
longer focal length and the working distance is a bit close.
