Which ones? There are at least 5 versions of the 50/1.8 and at least 3
of the 50/1.4.
What are your criteria? Some prefer the somewhat atmospheric quality
(relative to later designs; glass and coatings have improved a lot since
the early 70s) of the early single coated versions of one and/or the other.
If you want a nice sharp lens with good contrast and resistance to
flare, the last version of either will more than do the job.
For the 1.8, look for one with the words (including capitalization)
"made in Japan" on the front ring.
For the 1.4 look for one with a serial number over 1,090,000. (The
actual change is around 1,085,000, according to Tom Scales)
The difference in performance between these 2 will be a lot less than
between early and late models of either speed.
