Wayne,
I am not sure about all separations, but an 85-250 Zuiko I just bought
has separation in the the second element from the front, and it gives me
no end of flare. This separation extends about 1/2in into the elements.
I also do some large format, and only use old glass. I have had only
minor problems with stray light on these old lenses if the separation is
only 1/8in into the glass, even if it is all the way around. YMMV.
