That's the official, accurate way. To see if it's in the ballpark, meter
something stable in brightness with a camera/meter known to work and
compare the one in question.
For me, the quickie check is my computer screen on a mostly white app:
f4, 1/60 at asa200. Doesn't work for OM-4(T)s (and I guess 3(T) and 2S),
as their meter is so quick it 'wiggles' with the screen scan.
