I must say right away that having Olympus equipment helped make my bike
trip practicable. I didn't have the space to take the same items from some
other maker; the OM stuff is so compact that I could carry all that I did,
as well as my personal gear for a two week adventure.
There was a bit of a dampener on my bike trip too, but everything worked
out. When the ferry got to Douglas on the Isle, we all went to the hold to
prepare to ride off, but the propeller reverser failed and the ship rammed
the dock. This knocked over many bikes, and the hold filled with gasoline
fumes. Because other people were pushing in through the only two doors to
check their machines, those of us already there were trapped until the
ferry docked correctly and they got the big doors open. My friend's VFR
and mine were on center stands, so they didn't fall; all we could do was
sit there and wait for the air to clear, while some riders took flash
pictures(!) of their damaged bikes.
The rest of the trip was wonderful; even riding through torrential rains on
the motorways seemed like nothing after the scare in the ferry, and I like
riding/driving on the left; when I came back both times everything felt
wrong.
As for selling the pictures, my friend and I (both pro photogs) helped two
of our college mates start a local photo agency, so they marketed our
shots. We had press passes to the TT races from a cycle publication and a
request from a railroad magazine for pictures of the Isle of Man trains (It
was the 100th anniv. of the system). My friend Dave (also an OM shooter)
and I both sold photos to each magazine. The favorite shot I got is of
Joey Dunlop at Governor's Bridge on the last corner of the last lap of the
Lightweight TT just before he broke Mike Hailwood's record of TT wins. I
felt blessed to have been there at that magical place.
