One: Keep the thing completely out-of-sight.
Don't even bring it home, if possible.
Two: If out-of-sight is not possible, then there's a switch, concentric
with the ISO dial to shut the thing up (at least the 3 has a mute switch,
others, well...). It's not marked but it has a small stub, like a truncated
mode selector on the 4.
