I have a Canon FS2710 SCSI model and think the hardware works rather
well. I skipped the Canon software and use Vuescan which does more,
especially multiple scans to reduce noise. It comes with a SCSI card for
PCs, so I was sure of compatability. The APS adapter included was
important to me, as well. The non-coherent light source means it doesn't
need special software like digital ice that's needed for Nikon, Minolta
and ??? to reduce scratches and dust while softening the image.
The USB model wasn't available when I bought mine and I have no idea
about compatability with Apple. Also no idea about the quality of the
Canon software for Apple.
2720dpi gives more than enough resolution for 8x10 even with
considerable cropping. I figure it's good enough for me until 8000dpi
gets down under $500.

What do you folks like in the way of a slide/film scanner? I was
thinking of the Canon Canoscan F-4000 or 2710. Any recommendations? I
use a beige PowerMac G3/366 with a third party Keyspan USB card, so
any recommendations you guys might have will have to work with that
USB card (I've heard problems with the Nikon Coolscan IV ED, for
example, not working well with 3rd party USB cards on PowerMacs). I am
looking to spend in the $400 to $850 price range.
