For photographing paintings and flat work I had tried everything w/o success until.... bouncing the light off white cards (or umbrellas) to get even, no glare lighting! Some feel that you need a bit of a shadow w/ oil works (to show the depth of the strokes) but this level of detail is rarely seen on 35mm slide. Why do they need this photographed? Their own record? You might want to convince the into 4x5... if it is for any type of reproduction...
