Dear All,
These past days, there have been an abnormally large number of problems
with mails from the list to shaw.ca customers. This list has a number of
s*bscribers to shaw.ca. Basically, the shaw.ca mailservers have refused to
deliver messages from the list to individual mailboxes, and thus I've
received an impressive amount of error-mails to that end (one mail per
message sent to the list per unwilling mailbox quickly amounts to a lot
*grin*).
Since the problems seemed to be persistant, I uns*bscribed the unfortunate
email-adresses to cut the volume of errors (and to avoid having the list
try to send mails to an unwilling mailserver).
If this happens often enough to be annoying, there's a
better list admin package that is set up to deal with this
sort of problem automatically. The "Mailman" package
(http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman.html)
keeps track of bounces and turns off delivery to addresses
that are bouncing, without unsubscribing the address, so
that when the problem is resolved, the subscriber simply
edits the "nomail" option of his subscription.
This is also very handy for lists where posts are only
accepted from subscribers -- if you post from multiple
addresses, but only want to receive the list at one of them,
you subscribe all of them but turn off delivery to the ones
you only send from. Especially handy on the bicycle touring
mailing list I admin, some members have painfully slow
portable devices that they can send to the list with, while
not having to download the whole daily volume of the list.
