Well it can't be the curtains, otherwise the frame would also be smaller
than 36mm wide, plus the longest side would still be parallel to the
film edge, plus the curtains would have to start part way across the
gate and end before the end (IYSWIM).
I'm skeptical of the displaced sprocket suggestion, which leaves the
"not seated properly in the guide rails" hypothesis. Are there any dents
or bits of accumulated rubbish (esp at the film cassette end) in the
guide rails? enough to displace the film vertically at that end?
