This will help even if you have nothing to brace it against. The small
tripod hanging down off of the camera body increases the 'polar moment of
inertia' of the camera body/tripod combination, and so 'dampens' short
period vibrations, especially those created by an SLR during an exposure.
Also helps dampen those caffeine induced tremors most of us have after the
pre-shoot coffee-house ritual.
