Actually, I find this to be very interesting news--and it only
makes sense. For the past 12 years, or so, Olympus has been
designing and SELLING bridge cameras. These cameras are not
system cameras and, although they may meet the performance and
feature characteristics of the buying masses, they are nothing
more than temporary products until a new system is ready for
prime time.
For them to announce the "retirement" of the OM line means that
they are ready to pounce into the "Digital System" arena. Is
Olympus about to strike with a world-shaking product like the
origional OM-1 and OM-2?
Olympus is a "Commercial Products" company that happens to also
have a "Consumer Products" division. The OM system was
developed to span both divisions. Digital imaging (or lack of)
caused the OM system's demise for the commercial products
division. Will the new system span across both divisions?
I too, will be in the market for a new camera system before too
long. Will I go medium format or digital? Good question.
Having purchased nearly every one of my componants used and with
the generosity of others, my investment in the OM system has
paid for itself many, many, many times over. If I was to decide
right now, I'd get myself a decent 645 with both film and
digital backs.
Fortunately, I am at least a year away from any purchase, so I
hope new systems are introduced and the imaging technology
stabalizes a bit more. I hate the idea of my camera going
obsolete two weeks after buying it.
