I also have a walking staff which converts to a monopod when I remove the 
handgrip.  In my case the handgrip is the squashed 'plastic' cylinder type 
and not the wooden ball (which I did not fancy), and the stick extends 
enough for me to find comfortable (I am over six feet tall).
