FWIW, I think 4x4s and SUVs are valued mostly for the last difficult few
miles off the end of the tar-mac, and to intimidate other road-users and give
a little extra protection - as well as being a towing horse.
For a trip with a lot of travel where fuel economy could be important, where
off-roading probably won't happen at all, and where there's no need to
impress the neighbours, a capacious smaller and more economical station-
wagon would be my choice.
Something like a Subaru Leone, Toyota Corolla or Carib, has a wind-cheating
profile, enough space for 2 people & luggage, and good economy. 10 years
ago my good friends in WA, where the female of the two was a vet, used a
little Ford Festiva, travelled huge distances, and had low fuel costs. It was
not uncomfortable for 3 for day-trips.
My (now-deceased) brother-in-law went to Adelaide, bought a used Subaru
x4x (oops, 4x4) beater, drove from Adelaide clear right through the centre of
Australia to Darwin (had to clean the Adelaide lime deposit from the radiator
half-way through to keep the cooling going), then (I think) back to Brisbane
in the east, where he sold it. For a 6-week trip, that is also an option.
