The tentative plan is to start in CA at father-in-law's place at Cobb,

Missed one . . . you'll have to hit MD getting to DC from PA.
PA: While wandering around PA, consider Gettysburg Nat'l Military Park.
SC: The waterfront in Charleston SC is picturesque.
IN: Considering you should go through here to get to OH, if you dip south
a little, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum is interesting.
IL: Along the waterfront in Chicago are the Field Museum, Navy Pier and
the Museum of Science and Industry. The Chicago waterfront has been
preserved by the "city fathers" for mostly recreational activity, unlike
the heavy industry often found along waterfronts elsewhere. Very near
Chicago in Oak Park is Frank Lloyd Wright's original studio. Farther east
near Wheaton is Cantigny Park and Museum (the estate was owned by Robert R.
McCormick, former editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune).
