====Thanks for all the comments and suggestions! Since there have been
numerous
mentions of 'affordable' flash meters, could anyone recommend such a beast?
Truly appreciate it.

B&H has the Wein WP 500 for $69.50 new. See B&H page 31of Jan 2002
Shutterbug Magazine.
I picked up 2 of these in beat up condition about 8 years ago for $35 each
and they both work fine to this day. They require one 9v battery.
If you contact Wein they will probably tell you how to calibrate it.
I lost the instructions.
There are many schools of thought on using a flash meter but if you make
your set up and aim at the camera you should be pretty spot on.
Metering the background is another matter. You can try using the incident
method which is all you get with the Wein but if the background flash is too
close to the background the reading may be wrong. Reflected is better here.

My favorite portrait set up using all OM equipment is a OM2 on a tripod with
the appropriate lens set at (usually) f-8. A T-32 on a light stand with a
32" umbrella at about 8-10 feet from the subject. Using a long T-cord set
everything on manual.
The T-32 gives you a selection of full and half power. Take a reading from
the subject position and adjust power or distance accordingly.
Sometimes I will use a T-20 with a slave as a second light.
This is an incredibly small and light traveling setup that fits anywhere.

BTW, this set up on auto TTL is as accurate as any other TTL set up with
same equipment. A neutral background will help here.

A note about Flash heads and umbrellas. The flash should be set on the
umbrella rod so they are lined up as to not let light spill over the sides
of the umbrella. This is just stray light with wasted power and control.

Happy shooting and Happy Holidays,
Charlie
