Loooks like your expanding already :-) Here are some
of the answers you seek.

1: Does the flash come with a little calculator panel
on the back? If it does press the little button and
flip the calulator over to the side where it says,
"Full automatic control by OM-2" This enables the OTF
auto, you can use the camera in any mode and it'll be
this way. If you flash doesn't have the panel TTL is
enabled automatically. If you use the calculator side
of the panel you can enable full manual and normal
auto flash modes.

2: The MD1 and 2 can both run off the same battery
packs and can shoot film at the same speed of 5fps.
The MD1 was obviously designed before the MD2 and
doesnt have as many features like auto rewind on the
OM-3 or 4 or automated countdown nor does it have a
led screen with different modes. Think of the MD1 as a
winder that is much quieter, lighter, tougher, and
faster than the regular winders. The MD2 has a lot
more bells and whistles, but you pay a lot for those
extras. The MD1 was designed during the OM-1 and 2
line while the MD2 was designed during the OM-3 and 4
line so you are correct in this. Both are great pieces
designed for the pro as opposed to the winders which
were designed for the ameture. The MD1 even has the
advantage in weight and profile.

3: As for the battery pack, that can be the achilles
Heel of the MD system. You must either use the NiCad
pack or look for a control grip which carries AA
batteries, but isn't as slim and nice in my opinion.
NiCads wear down after awhile and can even leak,
causing damage to the circutboards. Do the batteries
in you pack carry any charge at all after a long
charging? New NiCads should be able to shoot several
hudred shots before needing a recharge. Luckily there
is hope if the batteries are dead and even if they
have leanked. You can purchase new battery sets form
retailers and rebuild your battery pack at home.
Olympus repair guys also will do this. Its a bit
expensive usually $100 or over, and even if you do it
at home the NiCad packs cost around $40. So if the
apck holds a good charge you are in luck and if it is
dead you can repair and replace the batteries. There
is a website around here somwhere that describes and
illustrates the battery replacement procedure but
someone else will have to give you it.

Hope this helps.
