Does the term 'wonder-bra' come to mind????? Just kidding. A standard tenor trombone is one continuous section of 'tubing' starting at the mouthpiece and culminating at the bell. An F-attachment is an 'extra' bit of tubing that's coiled up in (on?) the upper (above the shoulder) portion of the instrument that's selectable to be either in the airstream or not via a valve mechanism of one kind or another (usually rotary keys). The 'extra' tubing this inserts into the airstream enables the instrument to play certain notes unattainable on a straight tenor horn.
