I don't know if having a terminal gets you a lower rate or what, but we
have always only use software for CC processing for our business. First w/
a DOS program, and now using some Internet web site. One "nice" thing is if
you are off or if there is no zip code (e.g. foreign cards), you may get a
higher rate but the charge will go through. You will have to take the risk
of fraudulent cards of course, but the darned card companies don't care
about the merchants either way. Fortunately, in our business, frauds are
rare. We only have 2 fraudulent charges in 5 years.

I wouldn't ask for it if I didn't have to. Now it's required as the credit
card terminal requires it (along with the customers billing zip code) or the
charge simply won't go through.
