The test light is especially weak as the entire plastic frame of the test
button is epoxied into the chassis. When you push on the button, like, with
a fingernail, the rest of your finger is also pressing the plastic frame.
So, the epoxy breaks loose, the frame slips in a tad bit, the battery test
switch is always on (of course you won't see it) then recharging is
impossible because the test circuit is always on.
A mod we used to do for UPI was to drill a 1.0 mm hole in from the edge, tap
it to 1.4mm and insert a set screw. That's the ticket. The factory never
adopted this though.
