I have noticed that Tri-X printed full frame on Polymax paper and scanned at
150-300 dpi (on a relatively cheap Umax flatbed) is as sharp and has less
obvious grain than the same negative at max dpi on my newspapers'
CoolscanIII.
I think scanning B&W negatives may be different from scanning color.
Otherwise, scanning negatives will win because there is one less generation
of loss.
