There is a good free virus checker, AVG, at http://www.grisoft.com
The best firewall is free : C:\Program Files\Zone
Labs\ZoneAlarm\Help\ZoneAlarm_Help.htm
ZoneAlarm protects against attacks from outside (hackers), and from
inside (viruses). I don't know if it would help on mail attacks like this
one.
The writeup at symantec describes a very ugly virus!
