I hope all of you who quoted Gary's lens tests to me to show that the 40/2
is a lousy lens do not rely on someone else's lens tests for your opinions
on your own lenses. The only way to assess the capabilities of a lens, any
lens, is to go out and shoot pictures with it. A lot of pictures, if
possible. Pictures of your favorite and normal subjects with your favorite
and normal films. Only then can you begin to form a judgment on a lens. I
have shot with the 40 for years and have made some of my best pictures with
it. I use it for street shooting, candid subjects, both indoors and out.
I usually don't use it wide open, but that f2 aperture helps me focus it
accurately and the pictures are sharp, with a great tonal range (I shoot in
B&W), and with smooth, recognizable out of focus backgrounds. I'm sure it's
not the sharpest lens Olympus made, but it produces outstanding pictures.
