The back edges of some elements are painted black. The bubbles are between
the paint and the glass.

This is what could have happened to my lens, I guess. But do you mean the
black paint inside the lens barrel might have evaporated or so and then
condensed on the lens surface?

Sometimes,

Replacement of a lens element is out of my economic means, and I guess it
would be hard to find a replacement element and let someone put it in for
the price of a used lens.
What I find strange, however, is that the lens is still producing decent
pictures. I have an SC version also, and I can't see any difference between
the pictures taken with both lenses.
