In my last message, I mentioned that we're taking a trip over Christmas.
We're planning on leaving Edmonton around December 14th, and will
return on January 5th or thereabouts. We'll be in the LA area over
Christmas (I have a brother and sister who live there). The rest of our
itenary is going to be something like this:
- Edmonton to Kamloops BC via the Yellowhead Highway
- Kamloops BC to Bellingham, WA via Canada Hwy 1 and US 546/539
- Bellingham to Olympia via I-5/405 (with a layover at Seattle for
sightseeing)
- Olympia to Aberdeen via US12
- Down the coast to San Fransisco via US101/1
- Continue down the coast to LA via US101/1
As I said, we'll spend Christmas visiting my family, with the usual trips
to Disneyland and other tourist traps. Then, we'll head home this way:
- LA to Las Vegas via I-15 (layover in Vegas, hopefully not losing the
travel trailer in a card game! <Grin!>)
- Vegas to the Grand Canyon via US93 and I-40 (possibly via Flagstaff?)
- Grand Canyon to Leeds, UT via US-89 and US9 (quick stop at Zion
Ntnl Park?)
- Up I-15 to Salt Lake City, Idaho Falls, Butte, Great Falls
- Great Falls to Calgary/Edmonton via I-15 and AB-2
We've got a *lot* of information from the Canadian Automobile
Association. In fact, the tour books weigh more than the camera gear
we'll be taking (which, of course, weighs more than the clothing and
food we'll be taking! <grin!>). However, I'd welcome any suggestions
from folks that are intimately familiar with those areas. In particular:
1. Are there any "must see" spots along the WA/OR/CA coast? In
particular, I'd like to get some lighthouse shots, and Cori gets all
excited over tide pools teaming with sea life. And, I know there's a sea
lion caves tourist trap just north of Florance, Oregon, but are there any
spots that won't be packed with tourists were we stand a good chance
of getting some sea lion and/or seal shots? Oh, yeah, almost forgot...
We're both into wildlife and birding. Any great spots along the way for
that kinda shooting?
2. I notice on the map there's a place called Oregon Caves Nat'l
Monument off of US199 between Crescent City, CA and Medfor, OR. Is
that place open during this time of year and, if so, is it worth the side
trip?
3. For that matter, are there any other "must see" side trips we should
take? For instance, we're thinking of diverting from the coast over to the
Napa Valley area in Northern California, in order to do a few winery tours.
'Nuther words, any and all suggestions on spots to see and places to
go will be most appreciated!
Regards,
Chris
