Can you share a specific example of Microsoft selling the information they
collect from registration?  From a reputable source?

This is a common way to collect data which can then be sold. Many
websites do it. Micro$oft is an egregious example of this practice. I
wonder how many Mickey Mouses' and John Q. Citizens' living in Anytown
are registered.
