I've been giving this some thought, esp. polarising a 21mm - the trick
seems to be to use a much larger filter as close to the lens front as
possible. For instance, the amazing 12mm rectilinear Voigtlander Heliar for
the Bessa rangefinder uses a uses a step-up ring which clamps on to the
nose of the lens (like many Oly hoods) and a 77mm filter. If they can do
it...
The simplest is a 49mm step up to a much larger size (i.e.62mm) which works
for a standard thick polariser on the 21/3.5. I'm looking at alternatives
for the 21/4 and 15/4.5 Voigt. lenses I own which are much more difficult
(the 15mm has a built-on tulip - part of the barrel) and I notice that B+W
have a Universal Holder which clamps on to the outside of the lens nose
with three screws and then takes a step-up ring. It's made for lenses with
no filter threads but it should be possible to place a filter's glass right
on the front flange of the lens with this, if the lens has enough 'nose.'
Size 3 is for 37-70mm size lenses. Probably awkward to use but if it's all
there is...
I'm also considering modifying an old metal or rubber hood - cut off the
clamp ring and glue it to a step-up ring.
There's always a way. Quality slim polarisers are ridiculous prices!
