Actually, an ND4 saved my butt late in August of this year, when I went on a
multi-day foray through southern Alberta. The sunlight was so painfully
intense that, even with Velvia (ASA 50), I frequently found myself stopping
down to F/16 or so just to keep the automatic exposure system on the OM-4 or
OM-2Sp from going "Over" all the time. Even then, I wished for an ND8 or even
higher. Now I'm going to invest in better NDs (multi-coated -- the ones I've
got are older Tiffens, and I'm not even sure that they're single-coated).
