Douglas Engelbart is The Man.
Xerox blew it when it came to shipping a product. Apple blew it when it came
to licensing. Microsoft design "blows," and of course they have many ways of
blowing away any competition they care about. The real story is that the
industry hasn't moved beyond the direct-manipulation point-and-click
metaphor to take on Engelbart's deeper thinking about intelligence
augmentation:
