I personally think the tulip shaped hood is a feature
of 'very expensive' lenses in order to distinguish
themselves from the packs of mundane peasant lenses.
Just like the aluminum case and leather lens cap for
the white Zuikos. Its all a trick of clever marketing.

Maybe, but it also allows the hood to be smaller and to remain on the
lens when it is stowed. It is debatable whether a relatively small
tulip shaped hood, or a very large flared circular hood(It is a 69mm
filter size) would call the most attention. Certainly it is handier
than fishing around in the gadget bag for the usual screw in or clamp
on Olympus hood.
