Speaking of autofocus systems, allow me to put-in a good word for the
lowly OM-77AF.
Awhile back, I snagged one of these on e-Bay at a very nice price. At
the time, I wasn't really all that interested in the 77-AF, but curiosity got
the best of me.
When it arrived, I was amazed to find that it wasn't anywhere near as
"clunky" as I had anticipated. Although it is a bit bulkier than my other
OM gear, it's still pretty darned easy to hold and operate. Btw, this
particular 77-AF doesn't suffer from the all-too-common "broken battery
door syndrome."
I was also pretty impressed with it's focusing ability, as I'd heard the 77-
AF is "slow and unreliable" in the autofocus department. While this
may be true in low-light conditions, and of course it's not as fast as a
newer autofocus system (waddaya expect?!?!), the 77-AF certainly
does do a plenty good 'nuff job in normal situations.
And, finally, I've been very pleasantly surprised at the low cost of the
lenses for the 77-AF. I've now bought all of the Olympus lenses made
for the 77-AF, some of them LNIB, and not one of them cost me
US$100 (shipping included). And, while we're on the subject of lens
optics, my experience with the Olympus AF lenses is that they're pretty
decent. Pictures taken with my 77-AF are indistinguishable from
pictures taken with my other OM gear, at least at 4x6.
No, the OM-77AF isn't my "primary" camera... I'm still partial to the OM-
4 for regular use. But, I do frequently carry my OM-77AF system with
me, as it's a fun camera to work with.
So, if you ever have an opportunity to snag an OM-77AF for cheap, don't
pass it up!
Regards,
Chris
