I recently aquired through a trade/sale with
everyone's favorite enabler Mr. Scales a 50mm f2 macro
lens which I have tested and used as my normal 50mm
lens for a few weeks (forsaking a 50/1.4 sivernose and
50/1.8 MIJ) and have very pleased with the results.
However a comment on this list about macro lenses
focused to infinity kinda disturbed me in that it
hinted that macro lenses in general due to their
design and purpose aren't as sharp at infinity as when
being used in their macro purpose.
I haven't really seen a difference except in contrast,
the 50/1.4 silvenose I have is nice and sharp for me
but it has very little contrast, the 50/1.8 has about
normal contrast and the admittedly few pictures I've
taken with the 50/2 macro have seemed very contrasty
with nice vibrant colors making the 50/1.4's colors
looks almost pastel in comparison. I was wondering if
I am sacraficing sharpness for contrast in this
matter.
On a dimilar note does anyone on this list use a 50mm
macro (either version) for a normal lens? What little
time I've spent using the 50/2 has really pleased me
because the macro has a very small focus to infinity
of about 6-15 feet or something and can quickly serve
double duty as a macro since that is its primary
purpose. I thibk I've used this lens more in the 2-3
weeks I've had it then I ever did with my 50/3.5 I
traded to Tom.
