Split. Always. Eyes are usually a bit imperfect - good rangefinders aren't.
Portraits wide open - focus on the pupil of the eye. Almost nothing else
matters. (Essential with an f1.2).
A 1-14 would be handy as you could diagonal split focus on the eyelid.
