Your description makes sense, it could well be that that is the way it works
and that there isn't a dedicated contact for indicating whether the flash
was o.k.

Yes, this, and the "waiting-a-bit-longer-when-charging" trick might do
magic. I found my F280 works very poorly when the batteries are almost dead,
so that would be another thing to check...
