But a question remains unanswered - is the flash ready light in an OM-2n
(OM-1n and OM-40 too for that matter) powered by the camera's or the
flashgun's batteries?

The OM-2S was the only one made that powered the "ready" LED in the
viewfinder from the camera cells. All the others, OM-1 through OM-4ti,
power it using the flash cells. My guess for the color used in the "red"
LED conversion is two-fold. (1) It's the same color as used in the other
OM bodies. (2) It indicates the OM-2S has been converted to power it from
the flash cells without having to open up the camera or conduct any special
testing.
BTW, my OM-2S does not seem to suffer much from its "green" LED. I've had
a T-32 powered up in the hot shoe for hours at a time, its #357's have been
in it over 8 months, and it's still running strong. I'm not an occasional
camera user either (albeit not as heavy as a full-time
professional). Since John H. bundles the conversion with a CLA, and mine
definitely does not need a CLA (and shouldn't for some time), it will
continue with a "green" LED until it's time for a CLA.
