Well at least our OMs are generally small enough to carry in pockets
or a special gilet (OM content).
I did a short study of the airline industry for my MBA a couple of years ago.
They want more business passengers as the leisure/tourist ones don't
really pay their way (in Europe, in the US they *definitely* don't).
Airline fares are too cheap, the airlines' costs have to be low and
so the pay to the luggage workers is low (how low? Low enough to make
it necessary to move luggage quickly and with perhaps a little less
care than the owner would like).
If you want a safer (for you and your bags) airline business you have
to pay more to the airline for travelling. That's why one US airline
has gone out of business so quickly after the nastiness.

I doubt that this will actually 'fly' (pardon the bad pun.) The airline
industry is already in deep trouble by taking a hit from less folks traveling
for pleasure, you do this and you will loose many business travelers as well.
Business people need the time on the plane to work, and so will want
to be able
to take on laptops, paperwork, ect. I suspect it will be debated, but I don't
see it happening, at least on a permanent basis.
