One camera, one lens, eh?
The body for me's a nobrainer. The 4T or 4Ti. That's partly for the reason
they're the only ones I own, but also for the reason the 4T's the best (all
around) out there with Olympus in mind. Of course I've never tried the 3Ti
. . . .
Lenses are a different matter altogether. I'd guess, if I had to chose just
one, it'd be either the 35-70 f3.6 or 100mm f2, the former because it's
versatile, the latter because it's sweet. That zoom, by the way, gets a lot
of use from me. Having said as much, I walked around downtown yesterday
after hitting the bank, with just one body, and it had a 50mm f1.2 on its
front. But you know, I had to force myself to leave home with that lens
instead of something else, and I only did because it's been so long since I
gave it air. I hardly ever do these days, though there was a time, when all
I had were three lenses, that my modest little 50/1.8 enjoyed the lion's
share of my attention, and we were best friends.
One of our list members brought this up before I left on vacation--the
notion that it might be possible to have too many lenses. At the time I
wondered if that's the case. I will say I question my motives for owning
three Olympus bodies at a juncture of my life when all of my work is
casual, when there are days when I take no pictures at all. I equally
question why I own as many lenses as I do--not that my collection
approaches in sheer size those owned by others on this list, but I do have
more than I can reasonably give regular use to, with no practical (i.e.,
professional) application whatsoever. On the other hand, I do use what I
have from time to time and it's convenient to be able to take pretty much
what I want or need to a site for whatever the photographic purpose is
that I have in mind.
At least I've limited my photographic interest and lust for gear to the
35mm format. Lord knows where I'd be if I'd ever allowed myself to succumb
to the siren call of . . . Hasselblad. <g>

Hi Gang,
Through some recent reflection on my style of photography, and some off-list
discussions with a couple of members, I came across a question which may
lead to some interesting discussion on-list. If, for some reason, you could
only have one body and one lens in your kit, to be used for all your
photographic needs, what would they be? For lens considerations, you may
choose either a fixed focal length or a zoom, however if you choose the
latter, try to pick a focal length within the zoom range. For example, I
find that I use the 70mm focal length of the 35-70 f3.6 a lot for everything
from nature shots to candid portraits. My 50 f1.2 gets a fair amount of use
for street photography, especially when the light begins to fade. My 24 f2.8
and Tamron 17mm see the bulk of my nature shooting. However, if I had to
choose one lens to use exlusively, it would have to be the 85 f2. Mine is
beaten up, ugly looking, and needs replacing, but it could handle the bulk
of my shooting needs.
As for one body, I'd love to say the 2n, but would probably lean towards the
1n for mirror lockup.
So, what does everyone else have to say?
