Oly persons,
I admit to haveing deleted most of the WTC and
Afghanistan postings. I agree totally that it was a
horrible and dastardly act and it makes me sick to my
stomach to see and think about it. But once in a while
I have an original thought and want to burden you all
with it.
I agree to some form of punishment but I dread a
world-wide Vietnam type of war where the "enemy" can
be hiding around any corner and in any house or hut.
Just as a bank robber profits from his cash proceeds,
as a politician profits from the power he gains from
telling political lies, as the pundit profits from his
erudite comments, the terrorist profits from the
spread of terror and his boasts about it.
I say let's carve an exception from freedom of speech
in our country and the rest of the world for that
matter against terrorist speech and boasting.
Terrorist speech is to be made an international crime.
The burden of proof is only that the State has to
prove that a terrorist act was done(by anyone it
doesn't matter) and that the terrorist (need not be
the same one) boasts of having done it or having
advocated it. We need not go through the perhaps
impossible task of proving that Bin Laden have an
order "go blow up the WTC." If the terrorist cannot
"profit" from his bad deeds or speech, why do it?
One may complain about the diminishing of freedoms but
on the other hand our ability to travel, engage in
commerce, and feel like free people has been
curtailed. It is sort of like a psychic injury to a
political body. That we need not prove actual
causation is appropriate in view of the nature and
severity of the crime.
I apologize for this OT rant but this is the only
email list of any significance that I belong to.
