some recent scans that demonstrate ... something or the other. all of them raw,
untouched, fullsize. you see them as I saw the cd.
I have, in June, had FDIS transfer negs to CD rather successfully. for 7 bucks
a roll on top of dev/print, it was super, 1536*1024 images, good
shadow detail, nice hilights, tones, everything. i was happy.
Then, starting a month or two ago, I had another roll done to CD: completely
useless! I had better luck scanning prints on a flatbed. the highlites
were GONE, there was a bunch of grain (Fujicolour Superia 400, normally fine
grained) in there, and it looked basically very bad. I just had to try
again, and sent off about 60 frames, hoping that one bad cd was a fluke. nope,
they were gone bad. not only was the size scaled down to
768*512 (images in above link are fullsize!) but they appear horribly
oversharpended, grainy, and generally icky. about the only redeeming point
is decent shadow detail, but that too is noisy and needs a bit of levels tweak
to set black point. another reason i'm itching to get a filmscanner
once there's enough moolah! (ahhh, the mere thoughts of scanning my own K25/64,
Tri-X... AAAARRRRGH!)
chech out the historgram/levels: noisy curve (and on 24 and 25 (mebbe others
too), note the one HUGE spike on the left side of the historgram,
what is that!?). any ideas what went wrong? i want to know so that when i call
them up to complain, i can either suggest they fix things up, or
refund my dough.
so much for that. now the GOOD NEWS!
I had some negs sent off to Tom to scan, and he was kind enough to do them
(TWICE, after his HD failed!). amonsgt them were my astro shots,
and a few others taken to finish the roll. my astro shots can be found here:
